Feathery Friends

There were plenty of options, but I didn’t have the right pieces of scrap wood for most of them. IMG_9682On Tuesday afternoon, we had front row seats to these two male Northern Flickers doing a IMG_9685funny little dance in our driveway. At first I thought it was a male and a female but a bird expert friend of mine pointed out that they both have black markings under their bills, making them both males.

IMG_9720The grackles almost always look angry and disgusted by my presence, but I’m in love with them. Their color combination is perfect, especially in the sun. The first time I saw them in the yard, I mistook them for an ordinary black bird until I noticed their bright neon eyes. IMG_9696IMG_9699IMG_9699

IMG_9715This gorgeous purple finch visited one of our homemade bird feeders. The color fading down the belly and turning white on the legs, reminds me of bloomers under a colorful dress. 🙂

As for the woodcock, I have to give the photo credit to my husband. Something about this little face looks so happy, like he’s smirking. Love the feathers blowing in the wind.

Have you had any new faces pop up in your yard this week? I’m hoping to see many more this spring/summer. Happy Friday, friends!

I grew up in Downeast Maine but have recently relocated to the North Woods. I live in Clayton Lake where I am a stay at home Mom to two beautifully wild little boys and wife to a Maine State Game Warden. I am a lover of the simple things in life...a good book, a song, a rainy day, a bowl of white popcorn, etc. I have a slight obsession with all things food. Love cooking it, eating it, looking at it, smelling it, reading about it, etc. I am a firm believer that life is what you make it.
